Trying out new weeding tools

Trying out new weeding tools
Working with the Thiessen weeding attachment for our tractor

Farm Update

Plants are in the ground and that means weeding season is here!  Of course, all of our crops (including the ones indoors) require weeding, but the square footage we have to cover in the field makes it require an entirely different program.  Since we want to have a wide variety of crops available through our growing season, we always have to manage a wide range of weeding needs for crops that are spread out all over the farm.

Last year we trialed this tractor attachment made by Ryan Thiessen in St. Catherines.  Once we nail the technique, it will do 3 rows at a time instead of 1, combine the action of 2 different machines, and go faster than our walk-behind tractors can at the best of times.  It still requires a lot of skill and growing knowledge to operate, but it would free us up to do more of the other farm tasks we need to do and the efficiency would allow us to dedicate more time to weeding later in the season.  We’re pretty excited about figuring out these new tools.  It’s a good challenge and anything that allows us to do a better job at what we already do is a big win!

Plant sale: Now is the time to order seedlings!  We added a link on the information page for the plant sale which allows you to choose the week you would like delivery/pickup.  The earliest option is for next week, so get your order in as soon as possible and fill out the form!  If you don’t get to the form, May 23-26 will be the default week you’ll receive them.  You will get an email confirming the exact time/location on the Wednesday of the week you are getting your order.

Yogurt is now available in 700ml jars.  Please note: The team at the creamery has asked us to remind folks that jars/bottles need to be clean when they are returned.  Dirty containers makes for an unpleasant job that takes a long time and sometimes bottles have to be discarded.
