Crew planting field peppers

Farm Update

Field peppers have been planted!  Peppers were one of the last major stops in the process of turning spaces over for our summer mode.  As we have been saying a lot in the past few weeks; prepping these spaces is most of the work, the planting step is easy.  Although that is still true for these peppers, setting up the landscape fabric went pretty smoothly, then with our summer-sized crew planting was fast.

Alongside peppers will be eggplant, zucchini, tomatillos, watermelon and tomatoes.  These summer fruits are much easier to manage when we use landscape fabric.  Because of their longer season if we did not use fabric weeds would have more opportunity to go to seed, impacting whatever crops we put there in the following years.

A few smaller steps left before that space is totally complete, but we just need to add more sandbags and pound in posts for trellising, then we are good to go!

Things to Note from us: New this week are beefsteak tomatoes from the greenhouse.  Cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, beets are from our hoophouses. From the field we have kale, chard, spinach, arugula, radishes, choi and herbs.  Make sure to enjoy frost-sweetened carrots over the next few weeks until we run out!

Our plant sale has finished now, but we still have the last successions of living basil plants in our regular store for you to add to your veggie order this week.

From our suppliers: Sweet potatoes and rhubarb from HOPE Ecofarms.  Through Pfennings: a few varieties of potatoes. Additionally; fiddleheads, mushrooms and organic jazz or gala apples, and onions. Travelling from further away: peppers, jalapenos, celery, tomatoes, citrus, ginger, turmeric.

Bakery: Seth (La Houlette de vie) is away this week. Artisan Bakery is available this week, .

Dairy: Milk, yogurt and curds are available from Mistyglen Creamery. Yogurt is now available in 700ml jars.  Please note: The team at the creamery has asked us to remind folks that jars/bottles need to be clean when they are returned.  Dirty containers makes for an unpleasant job that takes a long time and sometimes bottles have to be discarded.

Pantry:  From Booch in London we have kombucha mixed packs and fire cider. Sunflower and hemp oil from Mat's Fine Oils.

T-shirts: awesome design by Amanda DeVries!

Middle River Music Festival: We have a family-friendly music festival on the farm every August.  Local music, food, and farm tours.  Early Bird tickets are on sale now in the 'music festival' tab on our website.

Too wet to use the tractor and waterwheel transplanter, so it's all-hands-on-deck for lettuce transplanting this week
