Farm Update

Tomatoes are here!  This early succession is in our greenhouse and has had a long journey before this point.  They were seeded at the beginning of February, grafted (which sets back their development by a week or more), and potted up.  We planted them during March break and have had to trellis them every few weeks since then.  Many hours of work have been dedicated towards these fruits.

From a production standpoint, there are a lot of other crops we can (and do) grow which require far less pre-harvest labour or complicated infrastructure.  At times it is really difficult to have to delay other important springtime tasks to trellis plants that are not producing yet.  However, we know that tomatoes are valued really highly by you all and that a longer season for this Mediterranean crop is important for our business.  So we continue to make it work and track labour inputs and production outputs.

Don't get us wrong, we really appreciate these early fruit crops too. The first few harvests were small as expected, though we aren't totally sure what happened, they seemed to have disappeared...  More will be coming this week and will be in our store!

Things to Note from us: New this week are cherry tomatoes from the greenhouse and new swiss chard/ kale plantings from the field.  Cucumbers, basil, baby beets are from our hoophouses. From the field we have spinach, arugula, radishes, choi and herbs.  Make sure to enjoy our sweet winter carrots and other root veggies while we still have some left.

Our plant sale has finished now, but we still have the last successions of living basil plants in our regular store for you to add to your veggie order this week.

Bakery: Seth (La Houlette de vie) is available this week, but will be away next week (week of June 3rd) so make sure to stock up!  Artisan Bakery is available this week, .

Dairy: Milk, yogurt and curds are available from Mistyglen Creamery this week. Yogurt is now available in 700ml jars.  Please note: The team at the creamery has asked us to remind folks that jars/bottles need to be clean when they are returned.  Dirty containers makes for an unpleasant job that takes a long time and sometimes bottles have to be discarded.

Pantry:  From Booch in London we have kombucha mixed packs and fire cider. Sunflower and hemp oil from Mat's Fine Oils.

T-shirts: awesome design by Amanda DeVries!

Middle River Music Festival: We have a family-friendly music festival on the farm every August.  Local music, food, and farm tours.  Early Bird tickets are on sale now in the 'music festival' tab on our website.
