Solidarity Program Update
and Call for Donations
Our Solidarity Program has been up and running for 2 months now, so we wanted to share some insights about how it’s going so far.
If you’re not familiar with it, our Solidarity Program aims to make healthy food more accessible to economically-vulnerable households in our community. The program splits the cost three ways: 40% is covered by community donations, 30% is covered by the farm, and 30% is paid by the recipient.
Immediately after it began in late June, the program supported sending boxes to 4 households. The usage accelerated substantially, supporting 19 boxes in July and 30 in August. Solidarity boxes have gone to over 20 homes, and about 50% of recipients have purchased a box more than once.
Since it began, this community has donated over $1400 to fund the program and help their neighbours access good, local food. As of now, over $1000 from that donation pool has been used to pay the community funded portion of each box. With the current usage rate, we expect the rest of the donation pool will be used up before the end of September.
We’re really happy with how the program is running so far, both excited and grateful by how the community has contributed. We’ve updated the system to accept individual and subscription donations. There is a link to donate below, but don’t hesitate to email us if you would like help adding either form of donation. We are looking forward to continuing this program together!

Farm Update
We had a fantastic time on Saturday here at the farm for Middle River Music Festival! There were a mix of new and familiar faces in attendance, both from London/St. Thomas and an impressive number of folks who we know from market that came all the way out from Kitchener. We love being able to connect with everyone and share this space, so it was really a highlight of the summer.
We were so lucky to have fantastic weather at the music festival on Saturday. though it seems like the clouds saved up all their rain for Sunday! It rained slowly, but consistently all day yesterday, totaling 23mm. We’re glad the rain came so slowly because that largely helped avoid standing water in the fields.
There is lots of weeding to do (we’re about halfway through our winter storage carrots), but we won’t have time to wait until the fields dry out to do it. We prefer to do weeding on a sunny, dry day because it’s more likely that the weeds we get to are actually eliminated and don’t re-root. In this case, the weeds are big in enough areas that, despite the conditions, we’re going ahead with weeding - though using a different technique. Instead of hoeing weeds and letting them wilt in place, we use the tools to pull them out to the pathways where, if they do re-root, we can get them with the tractor-mounted cultivator on a dry day. Right now, it's all about getting them away from our veggies, so they have freedom to grow while the weather is warm!
Have a question or something you would like to hear more about in a future newsletter? Let us know at the market, farm pickup, or send an email!

We had some extra weeding help last week when our good friend, Ruff, came to visit. She was actually eating the purslane, so we didn't mind at all!
