Storage Carrot Harvest

Farm Update

The recent temperature fluctuations are really keeping us on our toes!  We are looking ahead to the next few days and the new projected lows mean that we are refocusing on winterization and harvest.

We did have time to finally finish assembling our caterpillar tunnels, thanks to the very last morning before frost which also had no wind.  In the past, we have put plastic on those tunnels during light wind (not easy, though do-able).  This time we decided to combine two of our tunnels into one extra-long one, so still conditions were necessary in avoiding the plastic becoming an extra-long kite.  All of our caterpillar tunnels have names (not numbers- that would be too easy to remember) and historically have been named after farm dogs or human crew… but for this new extra-long tunnel we are considering “Mega Tunnel”.

The main outstanding harvest task is carrots.  Since carrots are insulated from frost by being in the soil, we’ve been focusing on tender, above-ground crops for the last few weeks.  Now that we don’t have an insulating blanket of snow here anymore and are looking at even lower daytime and nighttime forecasts, its time for carrots to come out.  The biggest concern, aside from the “shoulders” of the carrot’s tap root becoming frozen, is that the green tops will be damaged.  We store carrots without the greens because the greens decay more quickly and either stain or cause the root to decay.  But the greens are vital during harvest, because that's how the harvester picks them up out of the soil.  We nearly have the amount we need, so a crew is working on the last few beds now.

JOIN OUR CREW

We are looking for someone to join our incredible crew! This is a great way to gain hands-on experience in growing and selling organic vegetables directly to the community. This position is perfect for someone who likes working outside and wants to learn more about ecological agriculture.

Two positions available:
Full-time March to December 2026 (or starting earlier this fall/winter)
Full-time starting immediately and until the end of December

FARM STORE NOTES

FROM OUR FARM:

Head lettuces: These are the last weeks of magenta, mini heads, radicchio, endive, and escarole this year!  The fall weather makes them extra flavourful, so this is the perfect time to enjoy or try them.  Make sure to get your fill before they're done for the season!

Fennel: It's also their last few weeks of the season.  Fennel is great shaved into salads, in soups and sauteed.  Some of us on the farm even snack on it raw.  Its anise flavour adds freshness to lots of dishes.  If you haven't tried it, trust us, it tastes nothing like salty, black licorice!

Sunchokes: Also called Jerusalem artichokes, sunchokes are related to sunflowers.  Indigenous to North America, sunchokes are both edible and ornamental.  The plants grow 10' tall, with a beautiful sunflower-like blooms.  In the fall, the plants die back and you can dig up and eat the tubers!  Use sunchokes any way you use carrot or potato, and no need to peel.  Grated/thinly sliced in salad, in soup or stew, roasted, scalloped, sauteed or mashed.  Flavour is similar to potato but slightly sweeter and nutty.

From the field:Leeks, herbs (parsley, rosemary, thyme), salad mix, spinach, kale, collards.
From storage: Choi, head lettuces, carrots, beets, potatoes, sunchokes, arugula, celeriac, rutabaga, cabbage, green onion, radish.
