Farm Update
We finally planted onions today! Onions are pretty cold-hardy, so they could have been planted earlier in the season. However, the section we chose for alliums this year (garlic, onions and leek family) has taken a long time to dry out enough for us to prep the soil and add compost.
We have long-time struggled with perennial grasses in this spot, made more challenging because we had cabbages planted there last year. We were short on hands during the ideal weeding window for those cabbages and weren't able to do a very thorough job so… the grasses live on. Even with the field prep we have done, it’s likely we will be weeding large clumps of grass out of these onions. Since onions have to be weeded so many times before harvest, this may be a great opportunity to finally get ahead on the weed pressure in this section. We will see!
Plant sale pre-ordering is closed now, so if you didn’t get a pre-order in, you can find our seedlings at our farmer’s market stands or at our on farm Open House this Saturday! If you have ordered plants for delivery/pickup this week, more details will come out on Wednesday.
Potatoes have sprouted in the field! They aren’t poking up out of the soil quite yet, but sprouting from the "eyes" means good things ahead.
FARM STORE NOTES
Things to note from us:
Cucumbers are here! We're proud to say our cucumbers have turned more than a few people (including some farm workers) into cucumber lovers.
Green garlic in on. These are the immature garlic plants and the whole stem can be chopped up to cook as you would regular garlic. It's a similar process to chopping up leeks, but with an awesome, strong garlic flavour.
Baby beets are on again. If you haven't tried barbequed beets, we recommend! Chop off the greens to use for something else, quarter or halve the baby roots, season, and cook in a basket or griddle.
Field herbs now includefresh oregano and mint. Our farm crew loves making tea with fresh mint.
From storage: red cabbage, kohlrabi, daikon.
From the greenhouse and hoophouses: Cucumbers, rosemary, dill, cilantro, basil, radish, arugula, mustards and salad mix.
From the field: Spring kale, spinach, thyme, oregano, mint, rhubarb.
