Cosmos starting to bloom in the cut-flower garden.  Make sure to take some flowers home with you when you if you pick up at the farm!

Farm Update

We are so excited to see the season's first blooms in the cut-your-own flower garden!  Every year we plant these flowers as a thank you to everyone for visiting us and supporting the farm.  This year the garden is on the north side of the driveway, about halfway down.  There will be signs pointing to the access points and pruners left out on Thursdays, so you can take some flowers home with you when you come to pick up your veggies.  There is no cost for this, just bring a jar or a vase of water!

Extra exciting are the row of raspberries beside the flowers, which folks are also welcome to pick and snack on when they pick up.  They need a little bit more time before they're ready, but we should see the first ones in a week or two.  The farm crew is also looking forward to lunchtime berry snacking again!

We are sure to see berries ripening and summer crops growing fast with the heatwave this week.  Extreme heat like this requires us to be a lot more thoughtful in protecting our crops, and most importantly, each other!  We will be starting and finishing work earlier for the next few days to beat the heat as much as possible.  We will also change our regular schedule to spread big harvest tasks out across the week, so harvests can happen first thing in the morning when it's as cool as possible.  Field and greenhouse tasks will be in the morning, and barn/indoor work saved for the afternoon.  For our crops, it's really just a matter of making sure irrigation is working and the hoophouses are vented properly and don't overheat.  Rain should be coming on Tuesday afternoon, so as long as we can still get this week's planting and some weeding done before that, we should be in good shape.

A robins nest in the shady corner of Hoophouse 1.  We enter through the opposite door now, but remain under close supervision from the robin parents while working in there!

Farm Store Notes

FROM OUR FARM:

Green Cabbage are back in the rotation.  These are summer-type cabbages with a nice juicy and tender flesh.  We especially love this type for coleslaw or salads, but also hear some folks have been waiting for our summer cabbage to come back into season for making sauerkraut.

Garlic scapes are finally in season.  Fresh, sauteed, roasted, barbequed, pesto-ed, fermented.... what can't scapes do?!  Scapes are the immature flower heads of a garlic plant and we remove them because it helps the plant focus on using it's energy to make a nice large bulb.  They are also delicious!  Scapes have a milder flavour than bulb garlic and a texture like young asparagus shoots.  You can use them any way you use bulb garlic, or get creative with this early-summer treat.  They are here for a brief time every year, so don't miss out!

Our basil is looking lush and has a really nice strong flavour!  We are putting it on everything these days.

Field:Zucchini, herbs, salad mix, beets, radish, arugula, garlic scapes, choi, broccoli, kohlrabi, head lettuces, kale, and chard.
