New Crops are on their Way

New Crops are on their Way

Farm Update

We have been very busy turning over our hoophouses and tunnels to make room for new crops.  In March, although we still have lots of storage veggies, it tends to be a leaner time.  We have our staples on hand, but those smaller-volume specialty crops were enjoyed a long time ago now.  So for one reason or another, we run out of things we have stored, our hardy winter greens finish, and spaces need to be changed over causing us to have to say goodbye to crops like our parsley a little earlier than we’d wish.

The good news is new crops will be gradually trickling in over the next few months. Last week it was thawed enough for us to dig some parsnips and sunchokes.  Green onions that have been growing slowly in a hoophouse all winter are finally ready, and some early basil and greens will be coming in just a few weeks.

We are really excited for the greens, choi, herbs and beets that we just put in to our tunnels.  There was an awesome energy in the crew while we we’re transplanting and  we really got into a state of flow.  The winter slow-down was well worked for, but everyone excited to be back at it, putting in new crops, and we miss those leafy vegetables!  Absence has definitely made the heart grow fonder.

Especially now that its been sunny and warm outside we are itching to get into the field as soon as we can.  There wasn’t too much rain here over the weekend, so if things keep on this trend we should be planting early crops out there in 3 weeks… at least that’s what we’re planning on!
Seedling Sale
Our seedling sale is up on our website for pre-orders!  Lots of familiar favourites and this year we included zucchini, cucumber and beets.   These plants will be ready on the 3rd week of May (earliest date) for pickup at the farm, market or home delivery.

If you are getting a subscription box this week, make sure to make a separate order for your plants (more details on how to do this on the information page).

Things to note from us: It was thawed enough for us to dig sunchokes and parsnips.  Both are awesome roasted, but can be prepared any way you would potatoes or carrots. If you haven't had sunchokes, they are similar to potatoes, but with a nuttier flavour.

Surprise green onions are on this week!
