First bulk harvests are in the books

First bulk harvests are in the books

Huge beets from last week's harvest, including one that was over 2lbs!
Farm Update

Successful harvests last week, beets being one of the most notable because of their size!  We knew they were big, but we didn’t realize quite how large some of them were until we started harvesting.  Some crops can decrease in quality if they get too big, but luckily red beets are pretty resistant to that.  Our taste tests also helped confirm that they’re still juicy, delicious, and their size makes them easier to peel if that’s your style.

Our concern was mostly if the beets were going to be too big to fit between the knives of the root crop harvester.  We had that problem last year with purple top turnips.  Well, these beets barely fit, but all made it back safely.  That includes the largest beet of the day that Zach found, which weighed in at just over 2lbs.

It is definitely the time of year where we find huge vegetables, like those beets.  They have the benefit of growing up in the heat and long days of summer.  Then, the cooler nights of the fall allows them to grow even bigger whichout becoming tough and tends to make them sweeter.  We just hope the pests take their seasonal leave soon!

Bulk harvests and regular production continue, including what are often some of our busiest markets of the year. Other on our list includes turning over the rest of our tunnels and hoophouses over the next two weeks to transplant fall/winter greens.
Setting your Preferences: You can set food preferences for your subscription!  These preferences will change what goes into the initial list of produce we send you.  We really recommend doing this (or updating it) because it helps you start out with more things you like, especially if you don't end up customizing your order on a given week.  Also note: If you were a member with us when we used Harvie, your preferences were not able to be carried over and should be re-set!  To change them, go to ‘My Account’ and look on the right side of the page, or click this link below:
Job opportunities: We are looking for a delivery driver for 2-3 days a week.  Driver resumes should be sent to chris@commongroundfarm.ca
